Fire Prevention in the Workplace

No one expects a fire to happen in their workplace until it does. Why not plan for it instead of being shocked if it does?

Well Maintained Fire Alarm Systems – Life or Death?

Fire Alarm and Security Systems are more advanced than ever before thanks to continuous technical advancements. Life Safety Equipment monitors the small changes in your workplace and alerts you when certain thresholds are met.

An essential part of a good fire prevention plan is routine fire alarm maintenance, annual tests and inspections, and routine fire extinguisher inspections. Somerset can help keep you on track! Call us today if your maintenance routine is lacking.

Avoid the Clutter

I’m not talking about the excess piles of reports, notes, and file folders on your desk, I’m talking about those boxes you meant to throw into the recycling bin, but ended up stacking them in front of that emergency exit door that no one ever uses. Those old filing cabinets that you placed in front of the pull station because you just thought, ‘it’ll be fine, I’ll move them in a few days.’ The office water coolers that keep stacking up in front of the fire extinguisher because your pickup day isn’t for a few more weeks.

Regardless of where the clutter is stacking up, it slows the evacuation and the response time of your local fire station. Imagine seeing a fire started in the kitchen but the extinguisher is blocked and you can’t get to that pull station nearby because you left that filing cabinet there ‘for a few days.’ You get slowed down trying to get to both of these life safety devices and then when it becomes too much, you try to go for that emergency exit door that is also piled high. Imagine trying to get through that clutter if the power goes out. That clutter then becomes a great accelerant for the fire you are trying to run from… Think smarter, recycle those boxes, toss that trash, don’t leave useless clutter lying around.

Evacuation Plan

Many families have a home evacuation plan for their children in case of the fire. Large commercial businesses are required to have one as well, with escape routes and paths highlighted for each area of the building. Whether you are at home, at a small company, or a large enterprise, knowing where your evacuation plan is and how to get out depending on where you are is a major necessity to keep you and others safe.
