Fire Safety for Business

Does your commercial property have clear and accessible escape routes?

An escape route is a continuous and unobstructed path of exit from multiple locations within a workplace to a place of safety. This often overlooked safety fact for any commercial property, whether big or small, can be the difference between life and death. By keeping escape routes clear from obstructions, if an emergency occurs, you’ll know exactly where to go.

Are extinguishers/fire fighting equipment available?

It is important for all work spaces, big or small, to have adequate supplies of extinguishers or other fire fighting materials that have been deemed appropriate by your state’s codes and standards. Some codes and standards mark it as appropriate to allow the use of hose stations that are connected to a sprinkler system installed specifically for use by employees. Having sufficient protection is crucial.

Do you have a fully working and regularly tested fire alarm system?

It is recommended that your fire alarm system should be inspected once yearly, or more if otherwise stated by your local fire marshal. We would also recommend that you test your smoke detectors weekly to ensure their continued functionality and to report them to your neighborhood fire alarm and security company (that’s us!) if not.

Do you have a list of fire precautions for all employees?

All employees should be made aware of fire precautions in the workplace and trained on what to do in the event of a fire. To ensure the safety of all of your personnel, it is recommended that each employee undergoes a fire awareness training course to ensure proper safety procedures.

Do you have fire trained staff who know how to use an extinguisher?

Preparing for fire emergencies before disaster strikes can ensure employees safety. Training employees on what to do in the event of a fire, and on how to use protective equipment is crucial. It could also be beneficial to train and appoint ‘Fire Wardens’ who, in the event of a fire, could be in charge of other employees’ safety.

Does your evacuation plan include all staff?

Be sure all employees and other visitors have access to your evacuation plans/routes. Proper evacuation plans include all employees, with different routes from each location in case a fire is to block one of the routes. Routes should lead straight outside or to a fire protected room that also includes outdoor access.

Do you have a designated smoking area?

Designated smoking areas should be properly labeled and include proper ventilation if indoors, and include proper disposal receptacles. Trash cans should never be used for cigarette or other smoking products. All other areas should be marked as non-smoking, to ensure proper distancing from smokers and non-smokers.

Are fire extinguishers serviced and replaced regularly and when necessary?

Fire extinguishers should be inspected yearly by your local fire alarm and security company (that’s us!). A visual inspection is also required to be completed monthly by a designated employee or individual in the company. If fire extinguishers are not regularly replaced or serviced it could lead to a fatal outcome in the presence of a fire.

Do you maintain and regularly check electrical appliances?

Performing regular inspections on all appliances is important when ensuring fire safety in your business. To perform regular inspections, simply visually inspect appliances for proper functionality and check any flexible cables for proper condition. Ensure dust and debris are not surrounding appliances as well as other articles that could easily cause the appliance to overheat, and in turn catch fire.
