Every year we look forward to summer, whether that’s summer vacations, camping, BBQs with family and friends, or eating smores around a campfire. Regardless of the type of summer that you enjoy, these activities can also pose a fire risk if proper precautions are not taken.
Take note of these summer fire prevention tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable summer!:
- Be mindful of dry conditions. Summer heat and lack of rain can lead to dry vegetation, which is more susceptible to catching fire. Avoid burning anything outside during periods of high heat and dryness. Check with your local fire department to see if burning is allowed or if any restrictions are in place.
- Be careful with outdoor cooking and grilling. Keep flammable materials away from the grill, and never leave it unattended.
- If you plan to have a campfire, make sure it is in a designated fire pit and that it is completely extinguished before leaving it unattended. Take note that campfires and outdoor grills should be kept at least 10 feet away from any structures or combustible materials.
- Be cautious when using outdoor power tools such as lawnmowers and weed trimmers. They can easily ignite dry grass and vegetation.
- Properly dispose of cigarettes and smoking materials. Make sure they are fully extinguished and never toss them in dry grass or brush, make use of ashtrays or designated containers.
- Use caution when lighting fireworks. Fireworks should only be used in areas where they are legal, and always follow the instructions carefully. Keep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish fireworks before disposing of them. Or leave it to the experts!
- Keep a fire extinguisher on hand. Whether you are grilling or having a bonfire, it is important to have a fire extinguisher nearby in case of emergency.
By following these tips and being mindful of potential fire hazards, you can greatly reduce the risk of accidental fire during the summer months and keep yourself and those around you safe.
